Vincent L. Pass

Vincent Louis Pass died Friday December 9, 2016 at his farm in Old Fort, Pennsylvania.

Born February 10, 1922 in Export, PA, the son of Wendell Louis Pass and Karolina Pjosek Pass. Vince was the 11th of 12 children.

After graduating Franklin High School in Murrysville, Vince took a job was as a draftsman for Westinghouse.

After Pearl Harbor, Vince enlisted in the Navy. He served as a radio gunner in a Navy Torpedo Bombing Squadron. He flew missions for six months in the Pacific, mostly in the Solomon Islands. As a result of high scores on military tests, he was sent back to the US to enroll in the V-12 engineering program. He attended college at Bloomsburg for one year and in 1945 came to Penn State to finish his undergraduate degree in architectural engineering, graduating in 1948. He was the Student Commander of the midshipmen at Penn State.

While at Bloomsburg Vince met Cleo Kinney who he married on August 17, 1946. She predeceased Vince on September 15, 2007.

In 1948, Vince and Cleo moved to Austin Texas where Vince completed his Masters in Architectural Engineering. In 1951, the moved to Detroit, Michigan where Vince worked as a supervising structural engineer for General Motors.

In the fall of 1955 Vince came to Penn State as an Assistant Professor of Structural Engineering. He was the recipient of the Lindbach Award for Distinguished Teaching in 1969. He retired in 1981 as the head of undergraduate Structures Program in Architectural Engineering.

In retirement, Vince farmed and maintained a private structural engineering consulting practice

Vince was predeceased by one son, Robert W. Pass, and ten brothers and sisters. He is survived by a son, James L. Pass, of State College and one sister, Genevieve Lachmanek of Export.

Viewing will be Saturday December 17 at noon at Wolfe-Von Geis Funeral Home in Export. A Catholic funeral service will follow at 1 pm at the funeral home. Burial will be in Grandview Cemetery with military honors provided by the S. Greensburg,American Legion.
